The hydro dam Rurtalsperre lies in the nature reserve Eifel, Germany. It was built between 1934 and 1938, partially destroyed in the Second World War and restored in the 50s.
It is not the dam, which dominates the area, but the barrier lake lying behind it, which has created a unique natural landscape. This makes it worthwhile to take a short trip or hike there. Visitors are rewarded with an impressive outlook, you quickly forget that you are in such a highly developed country like Germany. Relax and leave your cares behind.
Though many people use the area as a tourist destination, it is very clean and tranquil there. This is because the lake is used as a drinking water reservoir - and who spits into the well you drink from?
